| Why
Rowing? |
| Rowing
is a great sport for many reasons. It’s low-impact, low injury
and low risk. It’s simple to pick up the basics and is one
of the few activities that provides a workout for your whole body,
developing strength, flexibility and cardiovascular capacity. It’s
also a great calorie burner, stress reliever and presents an excellent
cross-training opportunity especially for running, swimming, cycling
and rugby. Rowing is also a very sociable sport, you can meet new
people, be part of a team and take part in club or regional events
if you want to. Finally, rowing is one of the most age-friendly
sporting activities you’ll ever find. You can start at any
age (over 10) and continue for as long as you want to (there is
a racing category for over 70’s!) and if you keep rowing you
have every chance of staying fit well in to later life.

Learn
to Row Saturdays
Roughly once a month our Saturday novice session throws open its doors
to welcome potential new members. During the first introductory session
one of our UKCC Level 2 coaches will show you around our clubhouse,
and introduce you to the basic rowing stroke on the indoor rowing
machine before giving you the opportunity to try out the same skills
in one of our training boats (weather permitting). The fee for this
is £10 which includes the first weeks dedicated training and
two more sessions where you would join in with the rest of the novice
group. This is an informal and low cost way to try out rowing and
ideal if you’re not sure if this is the sport for you, or if
you already have some experience and just need a bit of a re-introduction.
Its also ideal if you’ve missed the formal Learn to Row course
and can’t wait for the next one to get started. Numbers of new
starts on these sessions vary depending on demand. We will run for
a single person but won’t take more than 4 complete beginners
in one day. If you’re interested in coming along to one of these
sessions please email captain@castlesemplerc.co.uk
using the heading Saturday learn to row.

Adult
Learn to Row
This is focused and structured course which will provide you with
all the basic skills you need to start rowing, give you some rowing
partners who are as new to the sport as you are and an introduction
to the club’s novice group. The course is managed by our experienced
UKCC Level 2 Coaches and during the first week you there will be at
least 1 coach to each 2 learners. During the three days of the course
you will become familiar with the range of boats in the club, the
basic rowing stroke, rowing commands, and (weather permitting) will
learn to steer, back and manoeuvre a boat on the loch. You will start
off using the clubs training singles which have buoyancy pontoons
on them and are almost impossible to fall out of (we say almost because
someone is bound to work out how one day!). This will allow you to
get the technique right before you have to worry about stability.
By the end of the three days you should have mastered the single,
started to work on your stability and also had the opportunity to
row in the training double and in a racing quad (4 people & a
cox). The course fee is £75 which includes all equipment, training,
insurance, a sandwich and soup lunch, tea/coffee & biscuits plus
2 months continued membership after the end of the course. This allows
you time to decide if you’d like to continue before committing
to the annual club fee. |

16-25
Learn to Row
This course is aimed at young people who haven’t had the opportunity
to row before. Rowing isn’t a common activity and, apart from
being fun and great for your figure, looks great on your CV or in
your UCAS statement. Rowing teaches you a lot about teamwork, overcoming
challenges, setting goals and planning towards them – all things
that employers, colleges and universities are very keen to see. It’s
also something you can talk about in interviews if you haven’t
had much work experience to draw upon.
The course will take place over the Easter weekend is managed by our
experienced UKCC Level 2 Coaches and will provide you with all the
basic skills you need to start rowing. During the weekend you will
learn all about the boats, equipment, basic rowing stroke, rowing
commands, and (weather permitting) will learn to steer, back and manoeuvre
a boat on the loch. You will start off using the clubs training singles
but will work in crews as well and will end the course with a team
race in a racing quad. If numbers and weather permit you may also
get the opportunity to try out the eight (think Vikings). The fee
is only £20 per person, thanks to local subsidy, and includes
all equipment, insurance, training and a snack lunch. |

When
to arrive
It would be helpful if you could arrive 5 or 10 minutes before the
time listed so we can start promptly. |
| |
How
to find us
The clubhouse is located within the fenced compound just behind the
Castle Semple Park Visitor Centre in Lochwinnoch. The big shutters
to the boat shed will be open but it will be easier if you enter through
the ordinary door to the right of these. If you go through this door
the training room is on the right at the end of a short corridor.
One of us will be waiting in there to welcome you. |

What
to wear
The main criteria for rowing clothing is that it does not restrict
movement and is close fitting enough not to get caught on equipment,
or your hands during the rowing stroke. As a quick guide wear flexible
trousers (i.e.joggers/leggings – NOT jeans) and t-shirts/tops
that aren’t too baggy. Avoid tops/hoodies with pockets at the
front as hands get caught in them. It's good to wear several layers
so you can adjust to the temperature as you warm up. For footwear
a pair of old trainers is ideal. It’s unlikely, but should we
get a hot sunny day then bring your sunscreen and a hat to shield
your eyes. You should also bring a spare set of clothes and a towel
with you – we don’t expect you to fall in but you should
always be prepared, and you are likely to get damp carrying boats
and from splashes from yours and others blades |
